Request an AppointmentWhat are orthotics?
Orthotics are inserts that fit into your shoes to support your feet as you walk, run, or jump. You may see orthotics at your local drugstore, but these fit generically and aren’t made for your feet.
At Metroplex Foot and Ankle, LLP, the podiatrists design orthotics specifically for your feet. They are a noninvasive treatment for foot and ankle pain.
What types of foot problems benefit from orthotics?
At Metroplex Foot and Ankle, LLP, your podiatrist may recommend orthotics for several types of foot and ankle problems, including:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Arthritis
- Bunions
- Diabetes
- Flat feet
- Bursitis
- Hammertoe
- Heel spurs
- High arches
Orthotics can also improve your gait to help alleviate knee, back, or hip pain.
What types of orthotics do you offer?
The type of orthotic you’re given depends on your particular foot complaints:
Rigid orthotics
Rigid orthotics don’t bend and are usually made from materials such as carbon fiber or plastic. They fit inside flats or sneakers – any shoe with a closed toe.
You benefit from rigid orthotics if you have aches and pains in your feet. The orthotics offer extra support for your soft tissue and muscles.
Accommodative orthotics
Accommodative orthotics are bulkier and softer than rigid orthotics. They are soft and made with thick, padded materials. You may need prescription footwear to accommodate them.
Accommodative orthotics are especially helpful for people who easily develop blisters, calluses, or diabetic wounds.
What is the process of getting orthotics?
Once you and your provider determine that custom orthotics are right for you, they’ll review your medical history and may order diagnostic imaging such as X-rays or a CT scan to evaluate the soft tissue in your feet.
Next, they’ll take 3D scans of your feet and upload these scans to a computer program that creates the plan for your orthotics. Your provider sends the plans to a podiatry lab to have the orthotics crafted.
When your orthotics are complete, you return to the office to have them fit. Your provider checks your gait and makes any needed adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.
