Tips for the Best Pedicure Ever

Are you ready to show off your feet in your new Spring sandals? Have you made your pedicure appointment? We bet you have! Pedicures are one of the best ways to treat yourself to a little pampering and get your feet ready to show off, but did you know that there are risks you are taking by getting a pedicure at an unreliable salon? Here are some tips and signs to watch for to ensure you get the safest and best pedicure.

Attention guys: Michael Jordan gets a pedicure once per month. If they’re good enough for His Airness, they’re good enough for you!

PREPARATION

Avoid shaving your legs right before a pedicure appointment. Should you accidentally cut your leg even the tiniest bit, you may allow bacteria to enter and unknowingly breed an infection. If you have wounds on your feet, it may be wise to skip your professional pedicure all together and do it yourself.

Try to schedule your appointment for first thing in the morning. Typically this is when the salon is at it’s most sanitary.

SANITIZATION

Whether it is shared equipment or new individual tools, sanitation is the most important key to a safe pedicure. Cross-contaminated tools or machinery can cause a bevy of issues such as, athlete’s foot, warts and many other nasty infections. Any non-metal tools should be one-time use equipment. If you are especially concerned that the salon you are going to may not be sanitizing their tools properly, you should have no issues with bringing your own tools.

PROCEDURES

Do not allow a pedicure technician to trim your toenails in a curved shape. Toenails must always be trimmed straight across as to avoid ingrown toenail issues.

Razors should never be used on the delicate skin of your feet. This is a direct invitation for fungus and bacteria to enter beneath the surface of the skin.

Ask your technician to avoid cut your cuticles. Instead, ask that they be pushed back with an orange stick. Your cuticles are meant to protect your nails from infection.

PRE-DISPOSED CONDITIONS

PRE-DISPOSED CONDITIONS

This is important to remember for people who are diabetic. Often times this will not change the fact that you can still receive a pedicure, but may modify the appointment.

Pedicures while pregnant are a common way to for mothers-to-be to get ready for delivery day. However, the fumes from the salon may be too much for mothers experiencing morning sick to handle. Ask to be seated in a well ventilated area to avoid any queasiness.
