We admit that flip flops are great for keeping your feet cool during harsh Dallas summers. But from the perspective of your Garland foot doctors, flip-flops are dangerous for both your feet and your ankles.

HERE ARE 4 REASONS TO AVOID WEARING FLIP-FLOPS:

  • Exposed to the Elements

Without the protection of actual shoes, you risk contracting infection and viruses through your feet such as Staphylococcus, athlete’s foot, and warts. A bad case of Staph infection can lead to amputation in worst-case scenarios.

  • Slower and Clumsier

A study done by Auburn University discovered that those who wear flip-flops actually take smaller steps than those who wear sneakers. Additionally, these smaller steps increase your risk of tripping. (Don’t forget, if you’re in a crowd, getting stepped on will hurt much more, too.)

  • Lots of Pain, Not a Lot of Gain

Because flip-flops only offer a thin piece of rubber between your foot and the ground, the impact to your heels is much greater. Thanks to the thin strap between your toes, the repeated motions of walking can cause massive blisters – when those pop, you are stuck with an open wound. Your toes also need to work extra hard to keep the flip-flop on your foot; over time, this can lead to hammertoes.

  • Even More Discomfort

Due to the flat nature of flip-flops, there is much less support for your arches. Without arch support, the joints in your ankles, knees, and hips are forced to overcompensate. All of this extra work can affect your posture; cause Achilles tendonitis, heel pain, and even back pain.

The next time you leave the house and slip on your flip-flops, reconsider that decision. Sneakers offer more support and protect your feet from dirt and bacteria.
